Vilnius University dismisses students over undisclosed AI usage
Despite the absence of a blanket AI ban, the university has encountered instances of students utilizing the technology in a manner deemed irresponsible.
The university's vice-rector for studies, Valdas Jaskunas, stated that during last year, approximately ten students had been expelled "for improperly using AI in their work, such as in their final theses."
The core issue lies in the lack of transparency, with students neglecting to disclose the extent of AI involvement in their work, he asserted. Similar challenges regarding AI usage are surfacing across other academic institutions within Lithuania.
Nora Skaburskiene, director of the Studies Directorate at Vilnius Tech, stated, "Instructors have mentioned that some students do use AI, and there have been cases where a student received an 'N' grade - indicating academic dishonesty - on their final assessment."
Vilnius Tech further noted that the most prevalent applications of AI among students include the generation of written assignments and the compilation of research references.
